Abstract

The article shows the dynamics of the study of such a phenomenon as “linguistic landscape”. Noting that the beginning of research in this direction was marked by the end of the twentieth century, when foreign researchers drew attention to the fact that natural language is recorded in writing in public places on signs, banners, information stands, the authors show that today this phenomenon, having place in an urban space can be used to analyze linguistic variability. It is concluded that the variant representation of languages is of particular importance, since it is associated with iden- tity and cultural globalization, as well as with the trend of the revival of national minority languages, which has been noted in recent decades. In addition, in a sense, the linguistic landscape can be understood as a marker of the progress of the city, and it is also a tool for analyzing mass linguistic variability in socio-cognitive interaction.
